Description

Business Writing Accuracy Level 2: Settling the Difficult Cases, Writing Reliably and Proofreading Fast

Resolve the delicate agreements and questionable constructions that still cause hesitation once the basics are mastered

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Once the basic rules are secure, what remains are the cases that make even strong writers pause: agreement with collective and compound subjects, sequence of tenses across a long text, conditional and subjunctive forms, and phrasing that sounds right without being correct.

Two days to work through these areas of uncertainty and gain speed when proofreading. Each rule is reduced to a simple line of reasoning and then applied to real business documents. Participants leave with their own personal watch points identified and a structured proofreading method.

Learning objectives

  • Apply agreement rules in complex cases including collective and compound subjects
  • Maintain a consistent sequence of tenses throughout a business document
  • Use conditional and subjunctive forms appropriately
  • Correct faulty constructions and frequent misuses of vocabulary
  • Proofread a long document using a targeted checking method

What makes this programme different

Work focused on the cases that resist, identified through an entry diagnostic test
Each rule reduced to a single question to ask yourself as you write
Proofreading of a long document brought by the participant at the end of the programme

Programme

1The agreements that resist

Reducing each case to a simple question

  • Agreement with compound and coordinated subjects
  • Collective nouns, quantities and fractions
  • Agreement in relative and inserted clauses
  • Impersonal and existential constructions

2Tenses and moods

Writing consistently across the whole text

  • Sequence of tenses in narratives and minutes
  • Perfect and continuous forms in professional writing
  • Conditional forms in cautious and diplomatic phrasing
  • Reported speech and the shift of tenses

3Syntax and precision of vocabulary

The errors the spellchecker does not see

  • Verb patterns and expected prepositions
  • Dangling participles and misplaced modifiers
  • Misused words, redundancies and unnecessary jargon
  • Punctuation of long sentences

4Proofreading a long document

An organised check rather than an intuitive read-through

  • Successive proofreading passes by error type
  • Identifying your personal watch points
  • Considered use of spellcheckers, style guides and dictionaries
  • Peer review between colleagues
