Description

E-Learning Modules: Storyboarding, Media Production and Testing Before Release

Twenty-one hours to move from a slide deck to a standalone module that learners complete on their own

  • 3 days — 21 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Turning a classroom course into a self-contained module is not a matter of recording a voice-over on slides. With no trainer present, learners disengage quickly. Screens follow one another without rhythm, instructions remain ambiguous, and the module absorbs considerable effort for very little completion.

These 21 hours focus on designing modules intended to be completed independently. Participants break content down into coherent learning units, write a screen-by-screen storyboard, produce the required media and build the activities that sustain engagement. They finish with the testing phase that prevents an unusable module from going live.

Learning objectives

  • Break training content down into learning units suited to independent study
  • Write a detailed screen-by-screen instructional storyboard
  • Produce the media required for the module in a usable format
  • Design interactive activities that serve the stated learning objectives
  • Organise the testing phase and process feedback before release

What makes this programme different

One complete module storyboarded then produced from the first to the last screen over the three days
A testing protocol reviewed by sample learners, with feedback processed during the session
Focused work on writing on-screen text and instructions for a learner working alone

Programme

1Scoping and Content Segmentation

From classroom delivery to standalone module

  • What independent study changes for the learner
  • Breaking content down into short, coherent learning units
  • Formulating objectives specific to each unit
  • Deciding what stays in the classroom and what moves online

2Screen-by-Screen Storyboarding

Write before you produce

  • Structure of a detailed storyboard and the information it contains
  • Writing on-screen text and the audio narration
  • Instructions designed for a learner without a trainer
  • Navigation and progress markers within the module

3Media Production

Images, voice and screens

  • Preparing and recording an audio narration
  • Selecting and editing visuals according to their instructional purpose
  • Creating screen captures and animated demonstrations
  • File organisation and naming conventions

4Interactivity and Embedded Assessment

Getting the learner to act

  • Types of activity available and the objective each one serves
  • Writing questions that test more than short-term recall
  • Designing the feedback given after an answer
  • Differentiated pathways based on learner responses

5Integration, Testing and Release

Check before going live

  • Assembling the module and checking navigation
  • Testing protocol with representative learners
  • Processing feedback and prioritising corrections
  • Monitoring usage data once the module is live
