Description

Workplace-Based Training: Analysing Activity, Guiding and Debriefing

Twenty-eight hours to turn real work situations into genuine learning sequences

  • 4 days — 28 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Teaching someone on the job cannot be improvised. The employee appointed to train a colleague knows the work but reproduces what they do without being able to explain it. The learner observes a great deal and understands little. Production takes over and the time set aside for discussion disappears.

These 28 hours focus on training delivered within the work itself. Participants learn to identify the work situations that generate learning, to break down a professional action and to build a structured progression at the workstation. They then lead the discussion sessions that allow the learner to put words to what they have done and turn experience into competence.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the situations within an activity that carry genuine learning potential
  • Describe the gap between prescribed work and work as actually performed
  • Build a learning progression at the workstation across several situations
  • Guide a learner in action without performing the task on their behalf
  • Lead a reflective discussion session after a work situation
  • Formalise the records that evidence the skills acquired on the job

What makes this programme different

Analysis work carried out on the real work situations brought by participants
Alternation between classroom sequences and filmed guidance practice
A workstation progression plan written during the programme and ready to use on return

Programme

1Work Situations and Learning Potential

Identifying what can be learned at the workstation

  • What distinguishes a learning situation from a simple task
  • Criteria for selecting the situations to be used
  • Identifying higher-risk situations and setting clear limits
  • The place of this training method within a wider development path

2Analysing Work as Actually Performed

From the prescribed to the real

  • The gap between the written procedure and observed practice
  • Breaking down a professional action into observable steps
  • Identifying practical know-how and implicit knowledge
  • Interviewing a practitioner to make their way of working explicit

3Designing the Workstation Learning Path

Sequencing the situations

  • Defining the intended learning outcomes for each selected situation
  • Ordering situations from the simple to the complex
  • Dividing roles between the workplace trainer and line management
  • Practical and scheduling arrangements for each sequence

4Support During the Action

Guiding without taking over

  • Levels of guidance and the trainer's gradual withdrawal
  • Instructions given before the action and observation during it
  • Handling errors in a live production setting
  • Signals indicating that the trainer should step back in

5Reflective Sessions and Learning Records

Prompting learners to speak in order to learn

  • Conducting the discussion that follows the work situation
  • Questions that lead the learner to explain their choices
  • Identifying and wording the skills acquired together with the learner
  • Written records and information to be passed on to the organisation
