Description
Python for Beginners in Business Roles: Discover, Code and Automate a Task
Discover Python in a short session and write a first script that is genuinely useful at work
- 0.43 days — 3 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
Many business tasks repeat in exactly the same way: extract a file, reprocess it, then send it back. Spreadsheets quickly reach their limits, and requests for improvements are passed to the IT team where they wait their turn. Without a first exposure to coding, it remains difficult to judge what could realistically be automated in-house.
This short-format session is designed to remove that first obstacle. You discover Python syntax and its data structures. You write and run a script step by step. You then identify which tasks in your own role lend themselves to automation and which genuinely belong to an IT project.
Learning objectives
- Describe the logic of a programme and how it runs
- Use variables, types and simple data structures
- Write a loop and a condition on a set of values
- Run a script and interpret an error message
- Identify the tasks in your role that lend themselves to automation
What makes this programme different
Programme
1Discovering the language
Reading code before writing it
- Identify the structure of a simple programme
- Use variables and basic data types
- Display a result and capture an input
- Run a script and read the error message
2Data and repetition
Letting the machine process the series
- Build a list and a dictionary
- Loop through a series of values
- Set a condition to filter cases
- Calculate a total and an average on a data set
3Your first useful script
Connecting code to your own workstation
- Read a common data file
- Chain together the steps of a simple process
- Write the result to a new file
- Recognise the limits of what you can automate on your own
Who is it for
Employees in support functions and business teams who deal with repetitive file processing and are curious about programming.
