Description

Design of Experiments: Building a Plan, Analysing Effects and Optimising

Structure your trials to gain more information from fewer runs and reach conclusions that hold

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Testing one factor at a time consumes time and leaves questions unanswered: interactions between parameters remain invisible and conclusions depend on the conditions under which the campaign was run. The settings selected then prove unstable as soon as they reach production.

Two days of practice on design of experiments: selecting factors and their levels, building a trial matrix suited to the available budget, analysing effects and interactions, then validating the selected setting. Exercises are based on supplied data sets and on a case brought by a participant.

Learning objectives

  • Frame the study question and select the response to be measured
  • Select the factors, their levels and the study domain
  • Build a trial matrix suited to the number of runs available
  • Estimate main effects and interactions
  • Interpret the results and identify the setting to be confirmed
  • Organise the confirmation runs for the selected setting

What makes this programme different

Matrices are built by hand before any use of software
A trial case brought by a participant is worked through from start to finish
Randomisation and blocking are practised on data taken from the shop floor

Programme

1Framing the Study

Defining the problem before running trials

  • Formulate the objective and the measured response
  • Identify controlled factors and nuisance factors
  • Set the levels and the study domain
  • Estimate process and measurement variability

2Building the Design

Choosing the matrix that fits the trial budget

  • Understand how full factorial designs are constructed
  • Reduce the number of runs with a fractional design
  • Identify confounded effects and their consequences
  • Randomise the runs and organise blocks

3Analysing the Results

Separating effect from noise

  • Calculate main effects
  • Bring interactions to light
  • Represent effects graphically
  • Distinguish an established effect from simple fluctuation

4Optimising and Confirming

From model to a setting that holds in production

  • Build a simple predictive model
  • Explore the domain to approach the optimum
  • Check the robustness of the selected setting
  • Plan the confirmation runs

Who is it for

Engineers and technicians in research and development, methods, laboratory or production functions who run trial campaigns.

Prerequisites

Be able to use basic descriptive statistics such as mean and dispersion.
