Description
Documentary Credits: Issuance, Document Checking and Secure Payment
Master documentary credits to secure export payment without being caught out by a discrepancy
- 2 days — 14 h
- In-person or virtual
- All levels
- Up to 6 participants
In export trade, the documentary credit reassures both parties, yet it pays only against compliant documents. An expired date or an incorrectly endorsed bill of lading is enough to block settlement. Sales teams often negotiate terms that the order management function cannot subsequently meet.
These two days provide a practical reading of the instrument. Participants follow the mechanics of the credit and the role of each bank, then learn how to have realistic terms drafted at issuance. They check a full set of documents as a banker would and compare the credit with other payment security instruments.
Learning objectives
- Describe the mechanics of the documentary credit and the role of each party
- Negotiate issuance terms compatible with the logistics of the transaction
- Check a set of documents and identify irregularities before dispatch
- Handle discrepancies raised by a bank and resolve them within the deadlines
- Select the appropriate instrument between documentary credit, documentary collection and guarantee
