Description

Workplace Risk Assessment: Evaluating Health and Safety Risks and Building the Action Plan

Build a risk assessment register that genuinely prevents incidents rather than one designed to satisfy an inspection

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Many risk assessment registers are copied from one year to the next without anyone having observed actual working situations. The result says nothing about real exposure and the action plan goes nowhere. The day an incident occurs the organisation discovers that its assessment did not reflect the work actually being carried out.

Two days to rebuild the approach from the shop floor upwards: break the organisation down into work units, observe and rate risks together with employees, formalise the risk assessment register, then build a prioritised action plan that is tracked over time.

Learning objectives

  • Structure the risk assessment approach within your organisation
  • Break activities down into meaningful work units
  • Identify risks through direct observation of working situations
  • Rate risks using an explicit and repeatable method
  • Build a prioritised action plan and organise its follow-up

What makes this programme different

The rating matrix is built by the group then tested on filmed working situations
Each participant leaves with the work unit breakdown for their own organisation
The link between assessment and action plan is covered through to the monitoring of committed actions

Programme

1Framing the approach

Who does what and with which data

  • Map internal and external stakeholders involved in prevention
  • Involve employees and their representatives in the assessment
  • Gather relevant data such as incident records and field reports
  • Define the breakdown into work units

2Identifying risks

Observing work as it is actually performed

  • Conduct a workstation observation without relying solely on procedures
  • Detect physical, chemical and organisational risks
  • Take account of psychosocial risks and postural constraints
  • Collect operators' own accounts of the difficulties they face

3Rating and formalising

An explicit method rather than a general impression

  • Select rating criteria that are simple and defensible
  • Take existing prevention measures into account
  • Write the risk assessment register so that it is readable by everyone
  • Organise its updating and availability to staff

4From register to action plan

What actually changes on the ground

  • Prioritise actions according to risk level and feasibility
  • Give preference to collective prevention measures
  • Assign an owner and a deadline to every action
  • Track progress and reassess after implementation

Who is it for

Safety officers · managers responsible for working conditions · owner-managers of small businesses and members of internal health and safety committees involved in risk assessment.
