Description
Lean Management: Mapping Value, Eliminating Waste and Sustaining the System
Embedding a Lean approach that lasts, rather than a series of improvement events with no follow-through
- 2 days — 14 h
- In-person or virtual
- Intermediate
- Up to 6 participants
Lean is often reduced to a few high-profile improvement events and then fades away. Standards are no longer held, daily management routines become less frequent and supervisors revert to old habits. The issue is rarely the tool itself but the management system that should keep it alive day to day.
Two days with a management focus: understanding value from the customer's point of view, mapping an end-to-end flow, selecting the improvement events that genuinely matter and, above all, establishing the daily management routines that make performance visible. This session differs from Yellow Belt programmes centred on running a single project through the DMAIC method.
Learning objectives
- Define value from the customer's point of view and identify waste
- Map an end-to-end flow and measure its lead times
- Select and sequence the improvement initiatives to launch
- Establish standards and performance management routines
- Support supervisors in shifting their managerial posture
What makes this programme different
Programme
1Value and Waste
Looking at the flow through the customer's eyes
- Define what the customer actually pays for
- Identify the main forms of waste within a flow
- Distinguish overburden and unevenness from waste itself
- Observe a workstation and quantify non-value-adding time
2Mapping the Value Stream
Seeing the whole before optimising a part
- Select the product family or process to be mapped
- Record processing times and waiting times
- Represent information flows alongside physical flows
- Build the future-state map
3Selecting and Running Improvement Events
Few initiatives, but taken through to completion
- Select initiatives according to their impact on the flow
- Organise a short improvement event with the teams concerned
- Build a work standard with those who will apply it
- Verify that the standard holds once the event has ended
4Sustaining the System
Management makes the difference
- Establish the daily stand-up meeting and visual management
- Address deviations at the moment they appear
- Shift the supervisory posture towards the shop floor
- Measure the maturity of the approach and relaunch it
Who is it for
Production managers, department heads and middle managers responsible for deploying a continuous improvement approach.
Prerequisites
