Description

5S: Sort, Set in Order and Sustain Your Workplace

Achieve a tidy workstation that stays tidy long after the workshop ends and the initial enthusiasm fades

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

The clean-up exercise went well and the workshop floor looked immaculate on Thursday evening. A few weeks later, tools have drifted back to roughly where they used to sit, cartons have returned to the aisle and nobody mentions the initiative any more. The tidying was done, but nothing was put in place to hold the result.

A full day dedicated to the method and above all to its final two steps, the ones that make the difference between a major clean-up and a lasting form of organisation. Participants run a 5S exercise on a real workstation, then build the written standard and the audit checklist that will hold the result in place.

Learning objectives

  • Link observed disorder to lost time and to the defects recorded
  • Carry out sorting using a usage-based criterion and deal with the items removed
  • Define a visual layout that makes any anomaly immediately visible
  • Write a housekeeping standard that is understood without verbal explanation
  • Build a short audit checklist that the team can use on its own

What makes this programme different

The exercise is run on a real workstation and not on a textbook example
The usual objections raised by teams are addressed one by one during the session
The day ends with each participant's audit checklist and control schedule

Programme

1The purpose of the approach

Organising to produce better, not simply to look tidy

  • Link disorder to unnecessary movement and to picking errors
  • Review the five steps and what each one concretely delivers
  • Anticipate the classic objections raised by shop-floor teams
  • Choose a realistic scope for a first 5S exercise

2Running the 5S exercise

Sorting, setting in order and cleaning on the floor

  • Sort by frequency of use and decide the fate of the items removed
  • Assign a single location to each item and make it visible
  • Use cleaning as a means of detecting emerging anomalies
  • Photograph the before and after to make the result objective

3Standardise and sustain

The final two steps make the difference

  • Write a housekeeping standard a new joiner can read and apply
  • Build a short audit checklist that is quick to complete
  • Set the control frequency and the feedback loop for deviations
  • Address drift without turning the audit into a sanction

Who is it for

Operators, technicians, team leaders and continuous improvement facilitators involved in reorganising a workstation or a work area.
