Description

Training Engineering: Analysing Needs, Designing the Programme and Measuring Results

Build a training programme that answers a genuine business need rather than a vague request

  • 0.29 days — 2 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

Requests rarely arrive in a usable form: a department asks for communication training without the underlying problem ever being defined. The programme is then built on intuition and measured only by participant satisfaction. The capabilities expected in the field remain unchanged and the budget is committed without measurable return.

These two hours address the engineering of the programme itself rather than the design of individual sessions covered in the instructional design module. Request analysis, specification brief, choice of delivery formats and evaluation framework are addressed in that order. Each participant works on a real project brought from their own organisation.

Learning objectives

  • Analyse a training request down to the underlying performance problem
  • Define the capabilities expected at the end of the programme
  • Write a specification brief that a provider can work from
  • Select delivery formats and programme architecture according to constraints
  • Define evaluation indicators before the programme starts

What makes this programme different

The session covers the programme and its governance and leaves session scripting to the instructional design module
Each participant works on a genuine request brought from their own organisation
A specification brief is started during the session rather than simply described

Programme

1From Request to Real Need

Framing the Right Problem

  • Reformulating the sponsor's request
  • Distinguishing a capability problem from an organisational problem
  • Gathering the field data available
  • Defining expected capabilities and observable criteria

2Designing the Programme Architecture

Choosing Rather Than Accepting

  • Selecting delivery formats according to audience and constraints
  • Sequencing of stages and overall programme duration
  • Balancing group sessions with on-the-job application
  • Budget, timelines and internal resources available

3Specification Brief and Evaluation

Making the Programme Manageable

  • Structure of a training specification brief
  • Selection criteria and comparison of proposals received
  • Levels of evaluation and associated indicators
  • Tracking the transfer of learning to the workplace

Who is it for

Learning and development managers and training project officers as well as human resources managers and consultants who design training programmes.
