Description

Instructional Design: Analysing Needs, Designing the Learning Path and Evaluating

Design training programmes that start from a verified need rather than from a catalogue of content

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Many training programmes are built from the content that happens to be available rather than from the work people actually do. Objectives are written in terms of knowledge, the sequence follows the trainer's outline, and evaluation goes no further than a satisfaction questionnaire. Participants enjoy the day and change nothing in their practice.

These two days provide a complete design method. Participants analyse a request until the real need is identified, write learning objectives that can be assessed, build a coherent progression and select modalities that fit. They then put in place the evaluations and the conditions that support transfer back to the workplace.

Learning objectives

  • Analyse a training request until the real need is identified
  • Write learning objectives that are observable and measurable
  • Build a learning progression consistent with participants' level
  • Select the modalities and activities suited to each objective
  • Design evaluations and the conditions for transfer to the workplace

What makes this programme different

Each participant designs a complete module from their own portfolio during the session
The objectives drafted are tested for whether they can genuinely be assessed
One designed sequence is delivered in front of the group and then reworked

Programme

1From Request to Need

What the sponsor asks for and what is genuinely missing

  • Distinguishing between the request, the need and the proposed solution
  • Scoping interviews with the sponsor and with future participants
  • Analysis of actual work activity and competency gaps
  • Identifying what training cannot resolve
  • Formalising the design brief

2Objectives and Progression

Stating what the participant will be able to do

  • Writing observable and measurable learning objectives
  • Structuring the overall objective and intermediate objectives
  • Breaking the programme into sequences and ordering the progression
  • Accounting for prior knowledge and differences in level
  • Sizing content to the time available

3Learning Scenarios and Modalities

Choosing the activities that make learning happen

  • Selecting methods according to the type of learning targeted
  • Alternating input, activities and feedback
  • Designing case studies and role-play scenarios
  • Combining in-person, virtual and between-session work
  • Building the session plan and the materials

4Evaluation and Transfer

Verifying learning and keeping it alive afterwards

  • Levels of evaluation and the tools matched to each
  • Building formative assessments during the programme
  • Assessing learning at the end of the programme
  • Conditions for transfer and the manager's role
  • Collecting data to improve the programme

Who is it for

Internal and freelance trainers, learning and development managers and officers, instructional designers, and subject-matter experts required to build training programmes.
