Description

Recruitment and Selection Interviews: Define the Need, Question Effectively, Decide with Confidence

Two days to stop hiring on impression and to base every decision on evidence gathered during the process

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

A role opens up urgently and the job description repeats word for word the one written for the employee who has left. Interviews follow one another with no shared framework and each interviewer walks away with a different impression. The candidate selected turns out to be poorly matched to the real requirement and the recruitment starts again a few months later.

These 14 hours run from needs analysis through to the hiring decision. Participants learn to translate a requirement into observable criteria, build an interview framework, ask questions anchored in situations the candidate has actually experienced, and challenge their own assessments. Interviews are simulated and then reviewed on the basis of the notes each participant has taken.

Learning objectives

  • Translate a role requirement into observable assessment criteria
  • Write a job advertisement that describes the actual work and the working context
  • Conduct a structured interview from a prepared question framework
  • Gather precise facts rather than impressions during the interview
  • Compare several applications against a shared assessment grid before deciding

What makes this programme different

An interview grid built around the roles actually open in participants' organisations
Simulated interviews reviewed on the quality of follow-up questions and note-taking
A candidate comparison exercise that brings judgement bias into the open

  • Selecting channels according to the role and market
  • Reading a CV without over-interpreting gaps in activity
  • Conducting a telephone screening interview

3Conducting the interview

  • Opening the interview and setting out how it will run
  • Questions focused on real professional situations experienced by the candidate
  • Follow-up questions that surface precise facts
  • Taking notes without losing contact with the candidate
  • Presenting the role and answering the candidate's questions

4Assessing and deciding

Comparison, trade-offs and follow-up
