Description

Disability Awareness: Moving Past Assumptions, Speaking and Acting Appropriately

A single session to replace assumptions and awkwardness with clear reference points and practical everyday behaviours

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

The word disability immediately brings to mind a wheelchair, yet most situations are invisible. Within teams, discomfort prevails. People are unsure how to address a colleague, whether to offer help, or how to react to a workplace adjustment that appears unfair. Silence sets in and the same clumsy moments keep recurring.

A short module delivered in person or virtually and open to all employees. You identify the main categories of situations and what they change at work. You examine your own assumptions and the origin of clumsy reactions. You practise ways of speaking and acting that can be applied as soon as you return to your team.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish the main categories of disability situations and their effects at work
  • Identify the assumptions that shape reactions within a team
  • Adopt vocabulary that describes the situation without reducing the person to it
  • Respond appropriately to a request for help or to the refusal of that help
  • Identify what a workplace adjustment changes in a team's day-to-day organisation

What makes this programme different

Short experiential exercises that let participants feel a sensory or mobility constraint
Work on sentences actually heard at work, reviewed and reformulated as a group
Dedicated time for the questions nobody dares to raise in a team meeting
