Description

Internal Mobility Interviews: Exploring the Project, Assessing Skills and Providing Direction

Two days to conduct internal mobility interviews that lead to realistic career paths

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Internal mobility interviews often turn into a polite conversation. The employee expresses a vague aspiration, the HR contact promises to pass the message on, and nothing happens. Conversely, some projects are encouraged without any verification of transferable skills and fail within a few months.

These 14 hours equip you for the exploration and guidance interview, which differs from both the annual appraisal and a difficult HR discussion. Participants learn to have employees describe their actual career history, to extract transferable skills from it and to build a transition path with dated milestones.

Learning objectives

  • Position the mobility interview in relation to the other interviews in the HR cycle
  • Conduct an exploration interview that brings out motivations and constraints
  • Extract from a career history the skills transferable to other roles
  • Test the employee's project against the organisation's real needs
  • Build a transition path with milestones, support measures and deadlines
  • Deliver a recommendation, including when it does not match the initial request

What makes this programme different

Practice in having people describe real situations rather than collecting stated intentions
A method for identifying transferable skills applied to genuine career histories
Work on communicating projects that are not achievable in the short term

Programme

1Framing the mobility interview

What this interview is and is not

  • How it relates to the annual appraisal and the career development review
  • The HR role between the employee, the current manager and the receiving manager
  • Information to share on roles, processes and timelines
  • Confidentiality rules and commitment to best efforts

2Exploring the career history and the project

Discussing situations rather than wishes

  • Questioning on achievements and preferred working contexts
  • Identifying drivers of engagement and sources of disengagement
  • Clarifying geographic, family and financial constraints
  • Distinguishing escape from a situation and genuine attraction to a role

3Assessing skills and gaps objectively

From the narrative to the competency framework

  • Extracting skills from the situations described
  • Comparing them with the requirements of the target roles
  • Identifying gaps that can genuinely be closed in the short term
  • Spotting the skills the employee underestimates

4Building the path and delivering the outcome

Turning intention into dated milestones

  • Choosing between training, immersion, mentoring and temporary assignment
  • Sequencing the path and setting review points
  • Communicating a recommendation that differs from the initial request
  • Working with managers and following up over time
