Description

Equity Markets Day to Day: Placing, Executing and Settling an Order

Understand what happens between a client order and the settlement of an equity transaction

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

An order placed on a share passes through several functions before it is settled: the trading desk, clearing and custody. Staff in support functions handle transactions of which they only ever see a fragment, and struggle to place their own task within the wider chain.

Two hours to follow the life of an equity transaction: market participants, order types and the order book, execution, then settlement and corporate actions. This foundation-level session is intended for professionals who want to understand the sequence of events rather than investment strategy.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the participants active in the equity market
  • Describe the main order types and how they are executed
  • Read an order book
  • Follow the post-trade process through to settlement
  • Identify the effects of a corporate action for the holder
