AutoCAD: 2D Drafting, Dimensioning and Print Set-Up in CAD

Produce a clean 2D drawing in AutoCAD and lay it out for printing or file exchange

Opening an AutoCAD file received from a third party is often enough to discourage a beginner: layers stacked with no logic, text at inconsistent scales, dimensions that distort and plots that do not come out at the right scale. Drawing quickly serves no purpose if the file cannot be used by others.

Two days to acquire the core gestures of precision drafting, organise a drawing by layers, annotate and dimension it properly, then lay it out from paper space. A complete drawing is produced from the first line through to the final plot.

2Modifying and Organising the Drawing

Working fast without losing control

  • Use the copy, offset and mirror commands
  • Trim, extend, fillet and chamfer
  • Create and manage layers and their properties
  • Apply selection sets and object filters

3Annotation, Dimensioning and Blocks

Making the drawing readable

  • Create text and dimension styles
  • Dimension a drawing consistently
  • Create and insert blocks with attributes
  • Apply hatching and legends

4Layouts and Printing

Delivering a usable document

  • Distinguish between model space and paper space
  • Create layout viewports and set their scale
  • Configure plot styles and line weights
  • Export and exchange the file with third parties

Prerequisites

Confident use of the Windows environment and the ability to read a technical drawing.

Teaching methods

Multiple-choice tests and role-play exercises. Assessment of learning at the start and end of the programme, with immediate and 60-day follow-up evaluations.
