Description

Business Presentations: Building a Storyline, Designing Visuals and Closing with Impact

Two days to build a presentation supported by genuinely useful visuals and deliver it with clarity

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Professional presentations too often rely on slide decks crowded with text, read aloud by a speaker facing the screen rather than the room. The audience reads faster than it listens, the argument is lost and the decision you came for is not taken.

This 14-hour programme focuses on presentations supported by visual material. Participants build a storyline directed towards a clear conclusion, strip back their slides, select the right representation for their data and practise speaking with the deck rather than reading from it. Each participant works on a real presentation they are due to deliver shortly.

Learning objectives

  • Build a storyline directed towards the intended conclusion
  • Reduce a slide to one idea and one legible visual
  • Select a chart format suited to the data being presented
  • Speak with the support of the deck without reading from it
  • Formulate a conclusion that states the decision or action expected

What makes this programme different

The participant's own deck is reworked slide by slide
A legibility rule is applied and checked under real projection conditions
The final presentation is delivered in meeting conditions with questions from the group

Programme

1Building the Storyline

From case file to argument

  • Identifying the decision expected at the end of the presentation
  • Selecting the elements that support the argument
  • Building a sequence of short, logical steps
  • Preparing a shortened version in case speaking time is cut

2Designing the Slides

One idea per slide

  • Reducing text and establishing visual hierarchy
  • Slide titles that carry the message
  • Graphic consistency across the whole deck
  • Handling documents intended for later reading

3Presenting Data

Figures, tables and charts

  • Choosing the representation according to the message carried by the data
  • Simplifying large tables
  • Highlighting the decisive piece of information
  • Delivering a spoken commentary on a chart

4Delivering and Closing

Speaking with the deck

  • Coordinating speech and what is displayed
  • Positioning in relation to the screen and use of the remote
  • Handling questions during the presentation
  • Formulating the conclusion and the request
