Description

Public Speaking with Impact: Voice, Emotion and Persuasion

Two days in person to add depth to already confident public speaking and genuinely move an audience

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

A presentation can be clear, well structured and still fail to engage: the message is delivered, nothing remains. Experienced speakers know their content but stay in a flat register, avoid silence, shy away from imagery and rising intensity, and leave the audience as passive observers.

These 14 hours in person are designed for people who already speak in public regularly. The work focuses on vocal material, rhythm, silence, rhetorical devices and the mobilisation of emotion in support of an argument. Participants write and then deliver their own texts in front of the group and take part in short debating duels.

Learning objectives

  • Use silence, changes of pace and variations in vocal intensity
  • Build an emotional progression that supports an argument
  • Use imagery, metaphor and anaphora in a professional address
  • Improvise a structured intervention on a set topic within a time limit
  • Withstand contradiction in a public exchange without losing your line of argument
  • Adapt your register to the nature of the audience and the moment of delivery

What makes this programme different

Short debating duels with a set topic and the side to defend drawn at random
Vocal work in the room with recording and comparative listening of each delivery
Every participant writes and delivers a personal three-minute text on day two

Programme

1Working on Vocal Material

Breath, timbre and intensity

  • Breath support and voice placement in the room
  • Variations in intensity and pitch in service of meaning
  • Use of silence before and after a strong idea
  • Articulation and sustaining the ends of sentences

2Mobilising Emotion

What sets an audience in motion

  • Distinguishing performed emotion from genuinely owned emotion
  • Building a progression from calm towards intensity
  • Using personal narrative to support an argument
  • Ethical limits of appealing to emotion

3Writing to Be Spoken

Devices, rhythm and memorable lines

  • Writing for the ear rather than for the page
  • Use of imagery, metaphor and repetition
  • Crafting a line that stays with the audience after the talk
  • Openings and closings of a spoken intervention

4Holding the Floor and Facing Contradiction

Improvisation and debating duels

  • Structured improvisation on a topic drawn at random
  • Use of space and engagement with the audience's gaze
  • Responding to a public objection without abandoning your argument
  • Recovering after a hesitation or an incident
