Description

IFRS 17: Selecting the Measurement Model, Valuing and Presenting Contracts

Understand the mechanics of IFRS 17 and read insurance financial statements built on its measurement aggregates

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

IFRS 17 has rebuilt the accounting of insurance contracts around discounted measurement blocks and a service margin released as services are delivered. The income statement no longer resembles the one finance teams were used to: the premium disappears from the top line and discounting effects become visible.

This one-day programme provides the keys to reading and applying the standard. Seven hours cover the scope of the standard, the aggregation of contracts, the measurement models available, the mechanics of the contractual service margin and the presentation of insurers' financial statements.

Learning objectives

  • Define which contracts fall within the scope of IFRS 17
  • Build groups of contracts and assess whether they are onerous
  • Distinguish the general measurement model the premium allocation approach and the variable fee approach
  • Break measurement down into future cash flows discounting risk adjustment and service margin
  • Track the release of the contractual service margin from one reporting period to the next
  • Read the insurance income statement and balance sheet produced under the standard

What makes this programme different

The measurement mechanics are taken apart block by block on a group of contracts tracked over several reporting periods
An income statement before and after IFRS 17 is compared line by line
Discussions between accounting and actuarial profiles are structured around a shared vocabulary
