Description

IFRS 3 and IFRS 10: Identifying Control, Accounting for It and Tracking Changes

Translate an acquisition and its subsequent changes into consolidated accounts that hold up to review

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

An acquisition is rarely reflected in a single journal entry. You first need to establish whether control has been obtained, then allocate the consideration paid to the identifiable assets and liabilities before recognising goodwill. The same difficulties resurface with every additional purchase or partial disposal, when a choice must be made between equity and profit or loss.

These two days build on existing consolidation practice. Participants apply the control analysis to ambiguous situations, then work through the accounting for a business combination. They deal with subsequent changes in ownership interest, with or without loss of control.

Learning objectives

  • Analyse the existence of control in complex ownership situations
  • Determine the acquisition date and the cost of the combination
  • Allocate the purchase price to identifiable assets and liabilities
  • Account for goodwill and non-controlling interests
  • Deal with changes in ownership interest with or without loss of control
  • Justify the specific cases encountered in restructuring transactions

What makes this programme different

A single group is tracked over several reporting periods through successive acquisitions and disposals
Consolidation entries are worked through on the board and then verified by participants
Ambiguous control situations are resolved as a group with written reasoning
