Description

Data and AI: Framing the Question, Reading the Results and Deciding in Your Role

Using figures and artificial intelligence tools without making them say more than they actually say

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Dashboards have multiplied yet decisions are not based on them. The indicator on display does not answer the question the business is actually asking. A variation is commented on without knowing whether it stands out from the usual noise. Artificial intelligence tools produce convincing answers that nobody knows how to verify.

This 7-hour day is designed for business roles rather than data specialists. Participants learn to formulate a decision-oriented question and then identify the data able to answer it. They build reflexes for reading results and recognising the limits of models. The day closes with integrating these elements into their everyday decisions.

Learning objectives

  • Formulate a decision-oriented question that can be translated into data analysis
  • Identify the data available and assess its quality
  • Interpret a variation by distinguishing signal from ordinary fluctuation
  • Distinguish an observed correlation from a cause-and-effect relationship
  • Use an artificial intelligence tool while verifying what it produces
  • Formalise a decision by making explicit the evidence behind it

What makes this programme different

The decision questions brought by participants provide the working material for the day
Misleading charts are analysed to build sound reading reflexes
A real decision is revisited and documented with the data genuinely accessible

Programme

1Framing the question and locating the data

Starting from the business need rather than the tool

  • Turning a business problem into an analysable question
  • Identifying the data available and where it comes from
  • Simple quality checks and handling missing data
  • Selecting indicators that genuinely answer the question asked

2Reading results and models

Questioning the obvious

  • Reading a distribution and understanding dispersion
  • Distinguishing ordinary variation from a significant deviation
  • Correlation
  • causation and hidden factors
  • Selection bias and the effects of how data is collected
  • What an artificial intelligence model can produce and what it overlooks

3Deciding and embedding the practice

From result to action

  • Moving from a quantified finding to a decision you stand behind
  • Considered use of artificial intelligence tools in everyday work
  • Verifying the answers produced and tracing sources
  • Presenting an analysis to senior management or to a team
  • Monitoring the effects of the decision taken

Who is it for

Operational managers · department heads · team leaders and project officers who wish to base their decisions on the data available to them.
