Description

Transferring Know-How: Prepare, Explain and Build Competence

Pass on your expertise to a colleague without improvising and without ending up doing the work yourself

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

An experienced professional knows how to do the job but does not always know how to explain it. Actions have become automatic, the reasons behind certain choices have faded, and knowledge transfer is often reduced to demonstrating once and then correcting mistakes. The newcomer progresses slowly and the expert loses time.

Two days to structure day-to-day knowledge transfer: identify what genuinely needs to be passed on, break the learning down into stages, explain without overwhelming, let the learner practise and assess progress. Each participant builds a transfer sequence based on their own role.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the know-how to be transferred and put it into words
  • Break learning down into progressive and achievable stages
  • Explain a task while adapting the level of detail to the learner
  • Let the learner practise and give useful feedback on what has been done
  • Assess progress and adjust your support over time

What makes this programme different

Each participant builds a transfer sequence based on a real task from their own role
Dedicated work on articulating actions that have become automatic
Practice in giving feedback on errors without discouraging the learner

Programme

1What Is Actually Being Transferred

Putting know-how into words

  • Distinguishing knowledge, procedure and practical craft
  • Articulating actions that have become automatic
  • Identifying critical points and frequent errors
  • What is learned through observation and what must be explained

2Structuring the Learning Progression

Learning in stages

  • Learning objectives expressed in terms of actions
  • Sequencing stages from the simplest to the most complex
  • Pace and duration of sessions within daily activity
  • Progress markers and milestones

3Explaining and Letting the Learner Practise

Show, guide, then step back

  • Explaining the why before the how
  • Commented demonstration and checking understanding
  • Gradual transition to independent practice
  • Asking questions rather than giving immediate answers

4Monitoring, Assessing and Adjusting

Feedback that drives progress

  • Observing performance and defining success criteria
  • Wording feedback on an error
  • Handling differences in pace and learning blockages
  • Review points with the learner and with the line manager
