Description

Artificial Intelligence in Finance: Targeting Use Cases, Tooling and Controls

Identify the finance tasks that artificial intelligence genuinely handles and set clear rules for their use

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Finance functions are approached constantly with so-called intelligent tools for data capture, reconciliation, forecasting or commentary writing. Without a clear assessment framework, the decision is driven by the vendor demonstration, and the project later stalls on data quality, verification of outputs and the confidentiality of the information shared.

Two days to distinguish what belongs to conventional automation from what learning models and generative artificial intelligence actually add. Each participant leaves with a scoped use case on their own perimeter, together with the controls that make it usable in production.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish rule-based automation, statistical learning and generative artificial intelligence
  • Identify the finance tasks where these techniques deliver a measurable gain
  • Formulate a workable request to a generative tool on an accounting or budget topic
  • Put in place controls to verify the outputs produced
  • Scope a use case by specifying data, roles and success indicators

What makes this programme different

Each participant scopes a use case on their own data and presents it to the group
Outputs produced by a generative tool are systematically tested against a control data set
Limitations are addressed through the analysis of real errors rather than a list of generic precautions

Programme

1What These Technologies Can Actually Do

Separating promises from real use cases

  • Families of techniques and the nature of what they produce
  • Difference between an automated rule and a learning model
  • Generative artificial intelligence applied to financial writing
  • Typical errors and situations where the tool is confidently wrong

2Use Cases in Accounting and Management Control

Targeting the tasks with the highest return

  • Automated reading of invoices and supporting documents
  • Reconciliations and anomaly detection in accounting entries
  • Cash flow forecasting and budget variance analysis
  • Producing management commentary and reporting materials
  • Searching internal accounting and regulatory documentation

3Data and Reliability of Outputs

Securing the input to secure the output

  • Preparation and quality of the accounting data used
  • Formulating the requests submitted to a generative tool
  • Verification and sampling procedures applied to outputs
  • Confidentiality of information shared with an external service
  • Traceability of processing for audit purposes

4Scoping and Rolling Out a Project

Moving from trial to everyday use

  • Selecting the use case and estimating the expected gain
  • Allocation of roles between business, IT and vendor
  • Maintaining human control over decisions
  • Supporting teams and the evolution of roles
  • Legal and compliance points requiring attention

Who is it for

Chief financial officers, finance and accounting managers, management controllers and treasurers.

Prerequisites

Working in an accounting, finance or management control role.
