Description
On-the-Job Skills Transfer: Prepare the Task, Demonstrate and Have It Practised
One hour to structure the transfer of a professional technique directly at the workstation
- 0.14 days — 1 h
- In-person or virtual
- All levels
- Up to 6 participants
An experienced colleague is asked to show the new joiner how it is done. The task is performed at full speed, explained in a few words, and the new joiner does not dare admit that nothing was followed. A few days later the error shows up in production and everyone concludes that the person simply was not paying attention.
This one-hour virtual session focuses on the act of coaching at the workstation itself. Participants learn to prepare the sequence, deliver a commentated demonstration, then have the task practised under observation before checking that it has genuinely been acquired. Designing and running a complete workplace-based learning scheme is covered in a separate programme.
Learning objectives
- Prepare the workstation and equipment before a knowledge-transfer sequence
- Deliver a commentated demonstration broken down into clear steps
- Have the task practised and correct at the right moment
- Check that the task is fully acquired before allowing independent working
