Description

Training Programme Design: Scoping, Trade-Offs and Steering Learning Journeys

Twenty-one hours to design blended learning programmes that hold together from initial scoping through to measuring their effects

  • 3 days — 21 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

A learning programme rarely succeeds or fails on the quality of a single session. It succeeds on how the request is scoped, on how the delivery methods are combined and on what the organisation does with the newly acquired skills once people return to work. Many blended journeys fall short because the building blocks were simply added together, with no overall logic and no steering.

These 21 hours are intended for those who design programmes rather than isolated sessions. Participants learn to investigate a request, to select the methods that serve each stage, to build the architecture of a journey combining in-person and virtual delivery, and to define the indicators that will allow them to steer the programme and then report on the results obtained.

Learning objectives

  • Investigate a training request by tracing it back to the organisation's underlying issues
  • Translate a skills requirement into a learning journey architecture
  • Make informed trade-offs between available delivery methods at each stage of the journey
  • Organise the steering of a programme with its stakeholders
  • Define the indicators used to monitor and evaluate the results obtained
  • Prepare the conditions for transferring learning into the workplace

What makes this programme different

A live programme brought by each participant and reworked throughout the three days
A delivery-method decision matrix built collectively and applied to the group's own cases
Dedicated time on transfer conditions and on securing line manager involvement

Programme

1Investigating the request

Tracing it back to the real issue

  • Distinguishing the stated request from the problem to be solved
  • Interviews with the sponsor and the line managers concerned
  • Analysis of the skills expected in real working situations
  • Drafting the specification and the success criteria

2Learning journey architecture

Combining delivery methods

  • Sequencing the stages of a journey over time
  • The educational purpose of each method used
  • Linking group sessions, self-directed time and on-the-job practice
  • Touchpoints and re-engagement moments between stages

3Set-up and stakeholders

Bringing the programme to life

  • Respective roles of the sponsor, the line managers and the facilitators
  • Organisational, resource and scheduling constraints
  • Communication towards future participants
  • Decision points and stage-gate approvals

4Steering during roll-out

Holding the programme together over time

  • Monitoring dashboard and the data to be collected
  • Warning signals during roll-out
  • Adjustments that can be made without reopening the architecture
  • Running review meetings with the sponsor

5Evaluating effects and transfer

Reporting on what has changed

  • Levels of evaluation and what each of them can genuinely evidence
  • Selecting indicators at the design stage
  • Conditions that support transfer into the workplace
  • Presenting the results back to the sponsor
