Description

Train the Trainer: Design, Deliver and Assess an Effective Session

Turn your subject-matter expertise into a session that participants follow and then actually apply

  • 5 days — 35 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Being an expert in a subject is not enough to pass it on. The occasional trainer prepares a dense slide deck, talks too much, loses the group by mid-afternoon and cannot say what participants have genuinely learned. Quality expectations within training providers add further requirements in terms of traceability and assessment.

Five days to build the role from end to end: analysing the request, writing measurable learning objectives, designing the session flow and its activities, facilitating a group including difficult situations, then assessing learning. Each participant delivers a filmed sequence and leaves with a complete design.

Learning objectives

  • Analyse a training request and identify the real underlying needs
  • Write observable and measurable learning objectives
  • Build a session flow alternating input and activities
  • Deliver a sequence taking adult learning mechanisms into account
  • Manage difficult situations within a group
  • Assess learning and make use of participant feedback

What makes this programme different

Each participant designs a sequence of their own training course throughout the five days
Two filmed delivery exercises make progress between start and finish measurable
The assessment tools produced can be used directly within a quality framework

Programme

1Analysing the Request

Understanding before designing

  • Distinguish the stated request from the real need
  • Identify the audience and their working conditions
  • Gather constraints in terms of duration and resources
  • Define the expected outcome at the end of the training

2Designing the Programme

From objective to a minute-by-minute session flow

  • Write measurable learning objectives
  • Break content down into coherent sequences
  • Select methods according to the objective pursued
  • Build the session flow and its timings
  • Prepare participant and trainer materials

3Understanding Adult Learning

Why an adult retains information or disengages

  • Take account of experience already acquired
  • Alternate formats to sustain attention
  • Encourage verbalisation rather than passive listening
  • Anchor learning through repetition and application

4Facilitating the Group

Holding the room from the first day to the last

  • Open the session and set the ground rules
  • Give clear instructions for an activity
  • Manage dominant or withdrawn participants
  • Handle objections and challenges
  • Manage time and differences in level

5Assessing and Improving

Evidencing learning and developing your course

  • Select the assessment method suited to the objective
  • Build a questionnaire or an assessment role-play
  • Collect satisfaction feedback beyond mere impressions
  • Use feedback to revise the session flow
