Description

Intermediate Scrum Master: Improving Flow, Coaching the Team and Measuring Results

Move beyond Scrum by the book and genuinely improve team flow and maturity

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

The ceremonies are in place, yet sprints still end with carry-over work, velocity no longer means anything and retrospectives run on empty. Scrum Masters already in post come up against root causes that reach well beyond their own team.

This second level assumes that running the ceremonies is already mastered. Participants work on reading the flow, handling dependencies between teams, facilitating disagreement and engaging with management. The two days focus on continuous improvement rather than on setting up the framework.

Learning objectives

  • Diagnose a team's blockages by analysing its workflow
  • Use throughput and lead time metrics to guide decisions
  • Facilitate a difficult retrospective and address disagreement
  • Manage dependencies across several teams working on the same product
  • Support management in evolving its own practices

What makes this programme different

Real sprint data is analysed to explain why the sprint goal was missed
Stalled retrospectives are replayed using alternative facilitation formats
Each participant builds an improvement plan for their team over the coming sprints

Programme

1Diagnosing Team Maturity

Seeing what is really holding things back

  • Reading recurring symptoms at the end of a sprint
  • Observation frameworks for collective maturity
  • Root cause analysis focused on the organisation rather than on individuals
  • Gap between the stated framework and actual practice

2Flow, Metrics and Predictability

Steering with useful data

  • Visualising the flow and limiting work in progress
  • Throughput, lead time and age of work in progress
  • The limits of velocity as a performance indicator
  • Forecasting based on historical data rather than on commitment
  • Detecting bottlenecks and invisible work

3Facilitation and Managing Tensions

Surfacing what goes unsaid

  • Retrospective formats suited to a team suffering from fatigue
  • Techniques for facilitating a technical disagreement
  • Addressing behaviours that block the collective
  • Giving demanding feedback to a team member or to the product owner
  • Moving from the decided action to the completed action

4Dependencies and Supporting Change

Acting beyond the team

  • Mapping dependencies between teams and departments
  • Synchronising several teams on the same product
  • Engaging management on date commitments
  • Common forms of resistance and levers for buy-in
  • Building an improvement plan across several sprints
