Description

AI Awareness for Public Sector Managers: Framing, Deciding and Supporting Teams

Position artificial intelligence within your department and decide what is permitted and what is not

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Public sector managers are increasingly questioned about artificial intelligence without having the reference points needed to decide: staff are already using personal tools, senior leadership is asking for productivity gains, and no one is clear on which tasks can be entrusted to a machine without weakening the quality of public service.

This seven-hour programme is designed for the management function rather than for individual tool use. It helps you identify relevant use cases within a team, set workable rules, lead the conversation with concerned staff, and understand the responsibilities that remain squarely with the manager.

Learning objectives

  • Explain to a team what a generative AI tool can and cannot do
  • Identify the tasks within the department where AI offers genuine value
  • Define usage rules that are workable and clearly understood by staff
  • Lead a conversation with staff who are concerned about their roles
  • Understand the manager's responsibilities in decisions supported by a tool

What makes this programme different

Each manager produces a one-page usage framework note for their own department
Staff objections are worked through in role-play exercises with reversed roles
A decision grid distinguishes delegable tasks from those that must remain in human hands

Programme

1Reference Points for Managers

Knowing what you are talking about in front of your team

  • The gap between advertised promises and genuinely sustainable use
  • Observable effects on workload and on skills
  • The questions staff most frequently ask

2Framing Usage within the Department

Deciding before practices take hold

  • Reviewing departmental activities and identifying the tasks concerned
  • Criteria for distinguishing delegable tasks from those to be retained
  • Rules on data and on which tools may be used
  • Coordination with digital and legal functions
  • Communicating the rules to staff

3Supporting Staff

Maintaining dialogue on concerns and resistance

  • Identifying concerns about employment and about the meaning of work
  • Conducting a one-to-one conversation on the use of a tool
  • Identifying skills development needs
  • Monitoring usage and adjusting the rules that have been set
