Description

Diversity and Inclusion: Spotting Bias and Building Inclusive Daily Practices

One day to spot the biases that creep into decisions and make your management practices more inclusive

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

The same profiles keep being selected for high-visibility projects. An application is set aside on the basis of an impression that is hard to put into words. A joke in a meeting leaves a team member uncomfortable and no one says anything. Stated intentions are not reflected in day-to-day decisions.

One day devoted to management practices rather than principles. You review the criteria behind your decisions in recruitment, performance reviews and the allocation of assignments. You practise responding to a remark that excludes someone. You leave with observable criteria and practical guidance for adjusting working arrangements to the situations you encounter.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the biases at work in recruitment and performance review
  • Analyse how assignments and opportunities are distributed within your team
  • Facilitate meetings in which everyone genuinely has airtime
  • Respond to a remark or a joke that excludes a colleague
  • Adapt work organisation to a disability or a personal constraint

What makes this programme different

A full day focused on everyday management practices rather than statements of principle
Situations covering performance review, allocation of assignments and meeting dynamics
A focus on decision bias, distinct from programmes dedicated to multicultural teams

Programme

1Bias at Work in Decision-Making

Seeing what goes unnoticed

  • Mechanisms behind our preference for those who resemble us
  • The decision points most exposed to bias, such as CV screening or performance review
  • Cumulative effects of small decisions on an employee's career path
  • Identifying the criteria actually used in a recent decision

2Inclusive Management Practices

Recruitment, performance review and assignments

  • Observable criteria for a recruitment or performance review interview
  • Allocation of visible assignments and invisible tasks
  • Access to training and to the projects that build careers
  • Adjustments related to disability or a personal constraint

3Holding the Line Day to Day

Responding and prompting others to respond

  • Responding to an inappropriate remark in front of the team
  • Distinguishing clumsiness from discriminatory language
  • Conducting a conversation with the person who made the remark
  • Drawing on internal contacts and available resources

Who is it for

Line managers and team leaders, as well as human resources professionals involved in recruitment and performance review.
