Description
Management Dashboards: Selecting Indicators, Tracking Performance and Engaging Teams
Build a dashboard your team actually consults and uses, rather than one completed out of obligation
- 2 days — 14 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
Many dashboards are updated every month without anyone using them. Indicators have accumulated in response to successive requests, the layout makes reading a chore, and the team sees the tool as a means of control, so the figures arrive too late to inform any decision.
These two days start from the intended use. You translate your objectives into a limited set of indicators, build a one-page layout that can be read at a glance, run a team review based on the figures, and identify the unintended effects produced by a poorly chosen indicator.
Learning objectives
- Translate your team's objectives into indicators tracked over time
- Select a number of indicators compatible with regular monitoring
- Build a dashboard layout that can be read on a single page
- Run a team review based on the selected indicators
- Identify the unintended effects produced by a poorly chosen indicator
- Adapt the presentation of figures depending on whether they are intended for the team or for senior management
What makes this programme different
Programme
1What the Dashboard Is For
Purpose before design
- Decisions the dashboard should make possible
- Difference between upward reporting and a team steering tool
- Reasons why existing dashboards are abandoned
- Recipients and update frequency
2Selecting and Defining Indicators
From the expected outcome to the measure
- Translating an objective into a measurable indicator
- Outcome indicators and activity indicators
- Precise definition of the calculation method and data source
- Deliberately limiting the number of indicators tracked
3Building a Readable Document
Layout and readability
- Organising a page according to the reading sequence
- Choosing chart types according to the nature of the data
- Comparison benchmarks and alert thresholds
- Written commentary accompanying the figures
4Leading Through Indicators
Engaging without controlling
- Presenting results to the team and the role of commentary
- Addressing a deteriorating indicator without singling out individuals
- Involving the team in the choice of indicators
- Perverse effects and workarounds caused by a poorly framed indicator
