Description

Agile Project Management: Framing, Iterating and Delivering Value

Adopting agile principles and practices without losing control of your commitments

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Agility is not the absence of a framework: it is a different framework, built on short cycles, continuous prioritisation and an ongoing relationship with the requester.

Four days to understand the principles, practise a full cycle on a running case study and identify what can — and cannot — be transposed into your own organisation.

Learning objectives

  • Position agile principles in relation to traditional project management
  • Structure and prioritise a product backlog
  • Plan and facilitate a complete iterative cycle
  • Measure progress through delivered value
  • Identify the success factors and limitations within your own organisation

What makes this programme different

A single running case study carried through the entire programme
Actual practice of the ceremonies, not merely their description
A clear-eyed analysis of what is transferable to each participant's organisation

Programme

1Understanding the agile approach

Why and when

  • Origins, values and founding principles
  • Iterative and incremental cycles versus sequential cycles
  • Types of project where agility genuinely adds value
  • Common misconceptions: agile means neither no plan nor no commitment

2Framing the need and the backlog

Describing what carries value

  • Product vision and measurable objectives
  • Writing backlog items that teams can act on
  • Prioritising: value, risk, dependencies, effort
  • Estimating collectively without false precision

3Running a cycle

The complete loop

  • Iteration planning and team commitment
  • Daily stand-ups: their real purpose and frequent drifts
  • Review: demonstrate rather than present
  • Retrospective: produce actions, not observations

4Steering and scaling up

Holding commitments over time

  • Progress and capacity indicators
  • Relationship with the sponsor and change management
  • Roles and responsibilities within an existing organisation
  • Typical obstacles and success factors

Who is it for
