Description

Participative Management: Involving Others, Deciding and Delivering Together

Involve your team in decisions without diluting the manager's accountability or slowing every timeline

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Announcing that the team will be consulted is a commitment. If the final decision ignores the contributions received, participation becomes a decorative exercise and trust erodes faster than it would after a clearly owned top-down decision. Conversely, putting everything to the group stalls matters that called for a fast answer.

These two days are designed for experienced managers. The work focuses on selecting the right degree of participation for each decision, then on facilitating productive group sequences and communicating the trade-offs made. This programme addresses the decision-making process, whereas the agility learning path addresses how the work itself is run.

Learning objectives

  • Select the degree of participation suited to each type of decision
  • Announce the participation framework before launching the process
  • Facilitate a group sequence to generate options
  • Arbitrate between proposals and then communicate the chosen decision
  • Entrust delegated decisions to the group and monitor implementation

What makes this programme different

A selection grid for the degree of participation applied to participants' real decisions
Three group facilitation formats tested in the room
Dedicated work on communicating a decision that departs from the proposals received

Programme

1Degrees of Participation

Deciding alone, consulting, co-deciding or delegating

  • What each degree commits the manager and the team to
  • Decisions that lend themselves poorly to group treatment
  • The effects of participation that is announced and then disregarded
  • The link between participation and final accountability

2Preparing a Participative Process

Framing the question put to the group

  • Formulating a working question the group can actually address
  • Selecting participants and the time allocated
  • Announcing the non-negotiable constraints
  • Clarifying how the decision will be made

3Facilitating Group Output

Getting a team to produce during the session

  • Opening up discussion, including with quieter profiles
  • Using short formats to generate options
  • Bringing the group towards a limited number of proposals
  • Managing dominant contributors

4Deciding and Reporting Back

What happens after the contribution

  • Selecting an option while making the criteria explicit
  • Communicating a decision that departs from the group's proposals
  • Allocating implementation tasks and organising follow-up
  • Assessing what the process actually produced

Who is it for

Team managers and department heads already in post who wish to involve their teams in decision-making.
