Description

Managing an Employee with a Disability: Onboarding, Adjustments and Follow-Up

Adapt the role, the pace and the conversations without reducing the employee to their disability

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

A new hire is being prepared, an employee discloses a condition mid-career, or restrictions appear after a period of sick leave. The manager is left alone with very practical questions: what to tell the team, what can reasonably be asked of the employee, which adjustments are feasible and who to involve internally.

One day to set a clear working framework: conducting the onboarding or return-to-work discussion, submitting a request for workplace adjustments, rebalancing workload and team organisation, then monitoring the effects over time. The situations addressed are brought by the participants themselves.

Learning objectives

  • Conduct the onboarding or return-to-work discussion without addressing the medical diagnosis
  • Identify feasible adjustments to the role and to working hours
  • Submit a request for adjustments to the relevant internal stakeholders
  • Manage team questions and tensions arising from the adjustments put in place

What makes this programme different

Situations brought by participants are addressed one by one during the session
An onboarding discussion guide is drafted and then tested during the day
Internal and external stakeholders are mapped from each participant's own context

Programme

1Framework and Perceptions

What the manager may ask and what is none of their business

  • Distinguish visible and invisible disability in day-to-day work
  • Identify the perceptions that hinder integration
  • Position the manager's role alongside internal occupational health stakeholders
  • Separate work-relevant information from personal health data

2Adjustments and Work Organisation

Adapting the role without disrupting the team

  • Analyse the actual requirements of the role and the points of difficulty
  • Design equipment-related, scheduling or organisational adjustments
  • Redistribute activities without creating a sense of unfairness
  • Formalise the request to the relevant internal stakeholders

3Discussions and Long-Term Follow-Up

Welcome, explain, adjust

  • Conduct the onboarding or post-absence return-to-work discussion
  • Answer the team's questions without disclosing personal information
  • Set follow-up checkpoints and criteria for adjustment
  • Prepare future changes to the role and career path
