Description

Training Delivery: Preparing, Facilitating and Managing a Learning Group

Keep a group engaged from start to finish and bring everyone back to the learning objective

  • 0.29 days — 2 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

Solid content alone does not make a good training session. The occasional trainer knows the subject matter but is left without options when facing a silent group, a participant who monopolises the discussion or the mid-afternoon drop in attention. The result is a slide deck being read out rather than a session being facilitated, and learning is limited to whatever each person chose to write down.

These two hours focus on the practical gestures of facilitation. Opening a session, varying the pace, questioning, steering discussion and handling difficult situations are all practised through short trials in front of the group. Each participant leaves with an annotated run sheet for their own sessions.

Learning objectives

  • Open a session by setting the ground rules and building group dynamics
  • Alternate facilitation methods to sustain attention
  • Frame questions that make participants produce and contribute
  • Manage behaviours that hinder the progress of the group
  • Close a sequence by checking what has actually been learned

What makes this programme different

Every facilitation technique is tried out in front of the group using a real sequence from the participant
Difficult situations are replayed until a wording that works is found
A timed run sheet serves as the guiding thread throughout the session

Programme

1Opening the session and settling the group

The first ten minutes

  • Presenting the framework and the ground rules
  • Gathering expectations and announcing the objectives
  • Techniques for getting the group started
  • Posture, voice and use of the room

2Making participants work rather than presenting to them

Varying the pace

  • Alternating facilitation methods
  • Open questioning and follow-up techniques
  • Running a sub-group exercise
  • Using the slide deck without being constrained by it
  • Managing time and overruns

3Managing the group and closing

Holding the course to the end

  • The dominant participant and the silent participant
  • Objections on content and challenges to the trainer's credibility
  • Drops in energy and ways to re-engage
  • Final summary and verification of learning
