Description

Workplace Mentor: Onboarding, Passing On Your Trade and Assessing Progress

Deliver effective mentoring without losing entire days to it and without leaving the new joiner to learn by watching others work

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

The new joiner is placed at a workstation and discovers the job by observation. Instructions arrive as the work comes in, mistakes are corrected without being explained, and the mentor often takes the task back for lack of time. When review time comes, no one can say precisely what has actually been mastered.

This seven-hour day equips the mentor. Participants learn to prepare the onboarding and build a progressive learning path, to pass on a professional practice using a simple method, to give useful feedback after a mistake and to assess learning against observable criteria.

Learning objectives

  • Prepare the onboarding and integration of the mentee within the team
  • Build a progressive learning path over the duration of the placement
  • Pass on a professional practice using a structured method
  • Give useful feedback after a success or a mistake
  • Assess learning against observable criteria
  • Organise the working relationship with the training provider

What makes this programme different

Each participant builds the learning path of their own mentee
A knowledge-transfer session is role-played and then analysed by the group
The question of available time is addressed by sharing mentoring across the team

Programme

Setting the framework from day one

  • The mentor's remit and the limits of the role
  • Preparing the arrival with the team and setting up the workstation
  • Running the welcome interview and the reference points to give
  • Sharing mentoring duties between several referents

2Passing on practical know-how

Enabling learning in the flow of work

  • Analysing an activity and identifying the key practices
  • Demonstration method followed by supported hands-on practice
  • Grading the tasks entrusted in line with progress
  • Treating mistakes as a learning opportunity
  • Safety instructions built into the knowledge transfer

3Follow-up, assessment and liaison with the training provider

Measuring progress and recording it

  • Regular milestone reviews and follow-up materials
  • Giving feedback on work that falls short
  • Observable criteria for assessing learning
