Description

CSR Level 2: Building, Steering and Reporting on Your Sustainability Roadmap

Turning sustainability commitments into a prioritised roadmap that is resourced and tracked over time

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

After an initial awareness phase, many organisations hold a baseline assessment and a long list of actions with no prioritisation. The heavier topics that touch the business model or procurement remain outside the scope because they call for trade-offs, and the initiative loses momentum.

These two days focus on implementation: ranking issues according to their importance for the business and for stakeholders, setting objectives and trajectories, building the roadmap workstream by workstream, governance of the steering process, data collection and accountability. Each participant leaves with a roadmap template.

Learning objectives

  • Rank sustainability issues according to their importance for the business
  • Translate the selected priorities into objectives and dated trajectories
  • Build a roadmap by workstream with owners and resources
  • Organise the governance and steering of the approach
  • Structure data collection and the production of reporting

What makes this programme different

Issue prioritisation matrix built on each participant's real-life case
Workshop on moving from an action list to a multi-year trajectory
Data collection process tested on an indicator chosen by the group

Programme

1Ranking the Issues

Sorting in order to act

  • Cross-referencing importance for the business and for stakeholders
  • Accounting for impacts generated and dependencies borne
  • Consulting stakeholders to validate the ranking
  • Presenting the outcome as a matrix
  • Selecting the issues retained as priorities

2Setting Objectives

Commitments that can be met

  • Moving from issue to objective and then to trajectory
  • Establishing a measured baseline situation
  • Interim objectives and pace of progress
  • Checking technical and budgetary feasibility
  • Wording that avoids any charge of over-promising

3Building the Roadmap

Who does what and with which resources

  • Breaking the approach down into workstreams and projects
  • Appointing owners and contributors
  • Budget and schedule resources per workstream
  • Steering governance and decision-making bodies
  • Handling trade-offs and blocked workstreams

4Measuring and Reporting

Data you can defend

  • Organising collection and identifying internal sources
  • Reliability, traceability and control of published information
  • Structure of a sustainability report and levels of detail
  • Internal and external communication of the results achieved
  • Annual review and revision of the trajectory
