Description

CSR and Allies Theory: Mapping, Mobilising and Engaging Stakeholders

Advance a CSR project by building on your supporters rather than trying to win over opponents

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

A CSR project brings together players with diverging interests: operational departments, suppliers, employee representatives or local communities. Project owners most often spend their energy on declared opponents while overlooking the quiet supporters who would genuinely move the file forward.

This three-hour workshop applies allies theory to a CSR initiative: mapping stakeholders according to their position, selecting the players to mobilise first, building progressive commitments and sustaining the relationship over time. Participants map their own project.

Learning objectives

  • Map the stakeholders of a CSR project according to their position
  • Distinguish allies from undecided players and opponents
  • Select the players on whom to concentrate mobilisation effort
  • Build progressive commitments suited to each group
  • Sustain stakeholder relationships over time

What makes this programme different

A stakeholder map of each participant's own project built during the session
A clear rule for allocating effort between supporters and opponents
Graduated engagement formats adaptable to every stakeholder

Programme

1Mapping stakeholders

Knowing who weighs on the project

  • List the internal and external players concerned
  • Assess their influence and their interest in the project
  • Position each one between open support and declared opposition
  • Identify the players whose position may still shift

2Mobilising allies

Concentrating effort where it delivers

  • Identify quiet supporters and give them a visible role
  • Turn an undecided player into an advocate through a limited commitment
  • Manage opposition without devoting most of your time to it
  • Build a core group that carries the project

3Sustaining commitment

Beyond initial buy-in

  • Graduate commitment requests over time
  • Make early results visible
  • Organise dialogue forums with stakeholders
  • Respond when a key ally withdraws
