Description

Conducting Career Development Reviews: Prepare, Lead and Close

One hour to conduct a career development review from start to finish without improvising

  • 0.14 days — 1 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

Invited the day before, the manager opens the review without having reread the previous record. The employee answers in generalities. The manager promises a training course the organisation cannot fund, and the written record is drafted from memory three weeks later. The exercise loses all substance.

This one-hour module follows the review through its full sequence. It covers preparation by the manager and by the employee, the conduct of the conversation itself, and then the formalisation of next steps. Unlike a module focused on regulatory frameworks, attention here is on what the manager actually does during the review and what those actions commit the organisation to.

Learning objectives

  • Prepare a review from the employee's career history and the previous record
  • Lead the conversation while distinguishing the employee's wishes from the organisation's needs
  • Reformulate a vague career project into workable elements
  • Respond to a request the organisation cannot act upon
  • Write a record that is usable by HR and by the employee

What makes this programme different

A review sequence worked through step by step within the real time of one hour
Explicit handling of requests the organisation will not be able to meet
A written record drafted in session from a review role-played in front of the group
