Description

Advanced Recruitment Interviewing: Structuring Assessment, Comparing Views and Deciding

Two days to make hiring decisions more reliable on demanding roles and secure the final choice

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

An experienced recruiter knows how to run a pleasant interview. Explaining why a candidate was set aside, on comparable evidence from one interview to the next, is far less common. For scarce roles or senior profiles, the decision is made by several people and views diverge without shared criteria.

These 14 hours are designed for recruiters already in practice who want greater rigour in assessment. The programme covers scorecards built on observable criteria, in-depth questioning of real work situations and the biases that weigh on collective decisions. The basics of interview structure are not revisited.

Learning objectives

  • Build an assessment scorecard based on observable and weighted criteria
  • Conduct in-depth questioning on real professional situations
  • Assess behavioural skills without resorting to personality judgements
  • Identify the biases affecting your own decision and that of the panel
  • Interview candidates who hold a strong position in their market
  • Formalise a reasoned opinion that can be defended before other assessors

What makes this programme different

Work on probing questions taken down to a verifiable level of detail
A comparison of assessors' views to reveal gaps in criteria
Filmed interviews on hard-to-fill profiles with analysis of the interviewer's conduct

Programme

1Building an Assessment That Holds Up

Observable criteria before impressions

  • Analysing the requirement with the line manager and ranking the requirements
  • Translating expectations into observable behaviours
  • Building a weighted scorecard and rating scales
  • Allocating criteria across the different assessors in the process

2Deepening the Questioning

Reaching the verifiable fact

  • Detailed exploration of professional situations actually experienced
  • Probing techniques to distinguish personal contribution from collective results
  • Handling general answers and rehearsed narratives
  • Exploring failures and areas of lesser comfort
  • Taking usable notes during the interview

3Deciding as a Panel Without Being Swayed

Comparing views rather than adding them up

  • Common biases in individual assessment and in panel discussion
  • Organising a decision meeting structured around the criteria
  • Handling disagreements between recruiter and line manager
  • Weighing proven skills against potential for development

4Interviewing for Demanding Profiles

Assessing while creating genuine interest

  • Interviews with in-demand candidates who have limited availability
  • Presenting the role and its constraints without embellishment
  • Recruiting senior staff and assessing the managerial dimension
  • Keeping questions lawful and ensuring equal treatment of candidates
  • Giving reasoned feedback to unsuccessful candidates
