Description

Communication for Legal Professionals: Clarify Your Message, Persuade and Drive Decisions

Be understood by operational teams and senior management without compromising legal rigour

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

A legal note that is accurate but unreadable protects no one. Legal teams produce sound analyses that arrive too late, too long or too cautious to be of use to those who decide. Business teams then get into the habit of bypassing the legal function rather than involving it early.

This one-day programme addresses legal communication from three angles: structuring a written document so that it can actually be used, speaking before a committee, and adapting your register to the person in front of you. The notes and files brought by participants serve as the material for the exercises.

Learning objectives

  • Structure a legal note around the decision expected
  • Formulate a clear opinion supported by a recommendation you stand behind
  • Adapt your language register to a non-legal audience
  • Present a legal analysis orally before a committee
  • Handle a difficult exchange with a business colleague under time pressure

What makes this programme different

Participants rework their own notes during the day
Every presentation is reviewed on structure and on the vocabulary used
Exercises replicate the urgent requests addressed to legal departments

Programme

1Writing to Be Used

Turning the note into a decision tool

  • Key message placed up front and a structure that serves the decision
  • Distinction between analysis, risk and recommendation
  • Expressing reservations without diluting the opinion
  • Length, format and layout suited to the reader

2Speaking to Non-Legal Audiences

Translating without distorting

  • Identifying the vocabulary that blocks understanding
  • Reformulating a rule as an operational consequence
  • Framing the actual question behind an urgent request
  • The counsel's stance between business support and safeguard

3Persuading in Person

Working within a committee's short time slot

  • Preparing an intervention of a few minutes
  • Visual support that is plain and readable in a meeting
  • Answering questions and handling objections
  • Closing with an explicit request for a decision
