Description

Agile Kanban Method: Visualise the Flow, Limit Work in Progress and Reduce Lead Time

Put in place a Kanban system that makes the flow visible and genuinely shortens delivery lead times

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

A team that starts too many items at once stops delivering altogether. Tickets pile up waiting to be tested. Urgent requests jump the queue with no explicit arbitration. The board exists, but it serves as a task list rather than as a system for managing the flow of work.

These two days enable you to deploy Kanban on a real activity. You model the flow as it actually happens. You set work-in-progress limits and explicit pull rules. You measure the lead time and throughput of your system. Finally, you facilitate flow rituals and launch your first improvement actions.

Learning objectives

  • Model a team's real workflow on a Kanban board
  • Define work-in-progress limits aligned with the team's capacity
  • Formulate explicit rules for moving items between columns
  • Measure the lead time and throughput of a Kanban system
  • Facilitate flow rituals and prioritise improvement actions

What makes this programme different

Building the Kanban board for the participants' own activity
Flow simulation demonstrating the effect of work-in-progress limits
Guided reading of cumulative flow diagrams

Programme

1Flow Rather Than Tasks

Understanding what really slows a team down

  • Kanban principles and incremental change
  • The concept of work in progress and its effect on lead time
  • Differences from Scrum and how the two complement each other
  • Types of demand and classes of service

2Modelling and Visualising the Flow

A board that describes the work as it really is

  • Mapping the stages of the actual work
  • Queue columns and active stages
  • Defining pull criteria between stages
  • Flagging blockers and rework

3Limiting Work in Progress and Steering the System

Explicit rules rather than case-by-case arbitration

  • Setting and adjusting work-in-progress limits
  • Pull rules and prioritisation
  • Managing urgent requests and interruptions
  • Addressing recurring blockers

4Measuring and Improving

Making decisions based on flow data

  • Lead time and throughput
  • Cumulative flow diagram
  • Flow and delivery review rituals
  • Identifying bottlenecks and improvement actions

Who is it for

Software development and IT operations teams, as well as project managers, support service heads and managers who steer a flow-based activity.
