Description

Organisational Diagnosis: Scoping the Assignment, Analysing and Presenting Recommendations

Build an evidence-based view of what is blocking an organisation instead of relying on team perceptions

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

When an organisation underperforms, everyone has an explanation: headcount, systems, weak governance. Without a method, the diagnosis becomes a collection of opinions and the feedback session runs into sensitivities. Decisions are then taken on impressions, and the same irritants resurface a few months later.

These two days provide an end-to-end approach: scoping the request, collecting data, analysing processes and interfaces, then presenting evidence-based findings. Each participant applies the tools to a real situation and leaves with their own interview guide and diagnostic report template.

Learning objectives

  • Scope the sponsor's request and formulate the diagnostic questions
  • Select data collection methods suited to the scope and timeline
  • Map processes and identify breakdowns at interfaces
  • Analyse the gaps between the formal organisation and actual working practice
  • Build a presentation that prioritises recommendations and their success conditions

What makes this programme different

The scoping note is drafted in session on a real assignment brought by the participant
The interview guide is tested with peers and refined before being used
A difficult feedback session is role-played with a sponsor who challenges the conclusions

Programme

  • Formulating diagnostic questions and expected deliverables
  • Identifying the stakeholders to involve and the risks of the assignment

2Data Collection

Seeking facts, not only opinions

  • Choosing between interviews, observation, questionnaires and document review
  • Building an interview guide and conducting the discussion
  • Observing actual work at the workstation and capturing irritants
  • Making use of available activity indicators
  • Confidentiality rules and the consultant's professional stance

3Analysing the Organisation

Linking symptoms to structural causes

  • Mapping processes and identifying breakdowns at interfaces
  • Analysing the allocation of roles and areas of overlap
  • Reviewing decision-making channels and waiting times
  • Comparing the published organisation chart with actual practice
  • Prioritising causes according to their impact on performance

4Recommendations and Feedback Session

Gaining acceptance for uncomfortable conclusions

  • Building change scenarios and assessing their feasibility
  • Quantifying expected gains in AED and implementation conditions
