Description

Artificial Intelligence in Graphic Design: Generate, Curate and Integrate

Embedding generative tools into a graphic production workflow without losing control of art direction

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Generative tools produce fast and in volume. The challenge shifts elsewhere: outputs must be filtered, directed and made to hold together within an art direction and a brand identity. Added to this are very practical questions around usage rights, traceability of sources and where these images sit within a production chain that is already fully tooled.

These 14 hours are designed for practising graphic design professionals. Participants build precise generation briefs, compare outputs and select on the basis of explicit criteria. They then bring the generated images back into their usual software and define the usage rules applicable to their client projects.

Learning objectives

  • Write a precise generation brief and refine it through iteration
  • Compare several outputs against explicit selection criteria
  • Produce variations consistent with an existing brand identity
  • Bring a generated image back into a retouching or page layout application
  • Identify usage limits and precautions associated with generated imagery
  • Position generative tools within an existing production chain

What makes this programme different

Outputs are reviewed collectively, as in a working art direction team
Each participant applies the tools to a project they currently have live
A usage precautions checklist is drafted for client deliverables

Programme

1Landscape and place in the graphic production chain

What these tools actually do

  • Families of generative tools and the types of output they produce
  • Formats, resolutions and technical limits of the images obtained
  • Entry points within an existing production chain
  • Rights considerations and traceability of sources

2Writing and refining your briefs

Obtaining an image that matches an intention

  • Structure of a generation brief
  • Vocabulary for framing, lighting and style
  • Successive iterations and controlled variations
  • Exclusion instructions and handling deviations

3Building variations within an art direction

Making the images hold together

  • Building a coherent set of visuals
  • Adherence to colour and typographic guidelines
  • Corrective treatments to harmonise a series
  • Presenting a reasoned selection to a client

4Rework and integration into the deliverable

From generated visual to final file

  • Retouching and cleaning up generation artefacts
  • Cut-outs, scaling and background preparation
  • Integration into layout and pre-delivery checks
  • Archiving sources and the briefs used

Who is it for

Graphic designers, art directors and layout artists wishing to integrate generative tools into their day-to-day production.

Prerequisites

Working in a graphic design role and confident with a retouching or page layout application.
