Description

Accounting Process Automation: Targeting, Tooling and Securing Transactions

Identify which accounting processes to automate first and secure what the system produces

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Accounting teams still spend considerable time re-keying invoices, reconciling bank statements line by line and rebuilding recurring entries every month. Automation is presented as the answer, yet projects often start with the tool rather than the process: a flawed workflow is digitised and the number of exceptions handled manually simply grows.

This three-hour session is designed for accountants and managers already in post. It teaches participants how to identify genuinely automatable processes, prepare the master data that determines the outcome and maintain appropriate controls once tasks are handed over to a system.

Learning objectives

  • Map accounting processes according to their automation potential
  • Assess the expected gain and the success conditions of an automation initiative
  • Prepare the master data and business rules required
  • Organise the handling of exceptions and rejected items
  • Adapt the control framework to automatically generated entries

What makes this programme different

Candidate processes are ranked by volume, repetitiveness and exception rate
Master data quality is treated as a precondition, not a technical detail
The control plan is rebuilt for entries that no one keys in any more

Programme

1Targeting the right processes

Automating what deserves it

  • Inventory of repetitive tasks across the accounting cycle
  • Selection criteria: volume, repetitiveness, stability of rules
  • Estimating the time actually consumed today
  • Processes that should not be automated as they stand

2Implementation

Process before tool

  • Types of solutions used for supplier invoicing and bank reconciliation
  • Business rules to formalise before any configuration
  • Quality of third-party and chart of accounts master data
  • Migrating existing data and running in parallel
  • Handling exceptions and rejected items

3Controlling and sustaining

Keeping control of what is produced

  • Adapting the control plan to automated entries
  • Indicators tracking the straight-through processing rate
  • Audit trail and traceability of the rules applied
  • Evolving skills and the role of the accounting team

Who is it for
