Description

Mind Mapping: Organising Ideas, Preparing Files and Sharing Your Thinking

Replace linear lists with a visual representation that shows the links between ideas at a single glance

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

A complex file rarely fits into a list. Ideas connect to one another, trade-offs depend on several factors, and linear note-taking loses those links. You then reread pages of notes without recovering the overall logic, and explaining the matter to someone else becomes laborious.

Two days to build readable mind maps by hand and on screen, to use them for taking notes, preparing a presentation, conducting an analysis or facilitating a group session, and to share a line of reasoning with a team.

Learning objectives

  • Build a structured mind map around a central topic
  • Select the branches and keywords that make a map readable
  • Use mind maps to take notes in meetings or training sessions
  • Prepare a presentation or an analysis from a map
  • Facilitate a collaborative working session using a shared map

What makes this programme different

Alternating between hand-drawn maps and maps produced on screen
Your live files serve as the subjects for the maps you produce
A collective map built live during a simulated meeting

Programme

1Building a Readable Map

The rules that make the difference

  • Central topic and main branches
  • Choosing keywords rather than sentences
  • Hierarchy of levels and colour coding
  • Use of images and symbols
  • Mistakes that make a map unreadable

2Taking Notes as a Map

Capturing structure in real time

  • Preparing the map before the meeting
  • Taking notes during a fast-moving discussion
  • Handling information that falls outside the topic
  • Tidying up and completing the map afterwards
  • Comparison with linear note-taking

3Analysing and Deciding

Putting the map to work

  • Mapping the analysis of a problem
  • Representing options and their consequences
  • Identifying links and dependencies
  • Moving from the map to an action plan
  • Limits of the tool for certain subjects

4Sharing and Presenting

From a personal map to a collective tool

  • Adapting a map intended for someone else
  • Mapping software and its useful functions
  • Building a map live in front of a group
  • Facilitating a meeting from a map
  • Circulating and archiving maps

Who is it for

Anyone handling subjects with many components, taking notes or preparing presentations and analyses.
