Description

Hostile Audiences: Absorbing Attacks, Responding Calmly and Holding the Room

Leading a tense session when the room challenges the message and questions the person delivering it

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Some speaking situations take place in front of an audience that is not waiting for information but for an opportunity to object. A reorganisation announcement or an unpopular decision: questions turn into a trial and the attacks target the person as much as the message. The speaker justifies, becomes irritated or cuts things short, and that is what the group remembers.

Two days to prepare an intervention by anticipating objections, hold your posture under pressure, answer a hostile question without justifying yourself and regain control when the room drifts. Role-play exercises are run in front of a group instructed to play hostility without going easy.

Learning objectives

  • Anticipate predictable objections and prepare short responses
  • Hold your posture and your voice when the exchange turns aggressive
  • Answer a hostile question without justifying yourself or counter-attacking
  • Handle the objector who monopolises the floor without antagonising the room
  • Regain control and close a session that has gone off track

What makes this programme different

Role-play exercises in front of a group instructed to play hostility without going easy
An objection grid built on your own upcoming speaking topic
Work on physical reactions under pressure: breathing, voice and grounding

Programme

1Understanding Hostility

What is at play before the first question

  • Distinguishing substantive disagreement, opposition on principle and personal attack
  • Group dynamics: the ringleader, the relays and the silent majority
  • What triggers hostility in an announcement
  • What the room really expects beyond the challenge

2Preparing the Intervention

Anticipation is half the work

  • Listing predictable objections and trap questions
  • Preparing short responses that will hold over time
  • Choosing what is negotiable and what is not
  • Organising the room, speaking time and the question format

3Holding Up Under Pressure

Body, voice and emotions

  • Identifying your physical reactions at the moment the attack lands
  • Breathing, voice and grounding to slow down instead of speeding up
  • Acknowledging without endorsing and without justifying yourself
  • Holding silence for a few seconds without panicking

4Regaining Control

From disruption to conclusion

  • Handling the objector who monopolises the floor in front of everyone
  • Bringing a personal attack back to the substance
  • Managing interruptions, murmuring and part of the room walking out
  • Closing on what has been decided and on next steps
