Description

Advanced IFRS: Analysing, Accounting for and Documenting Complex Transactions

Account for complex transactions under IFRS and justify every adjustment to your auditors

  • 3 days — 21 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Consolidation teams handle routine treatments without difficulty but come up against transactions that fall outside the usual pattern: an acquisition involving contingent consideration, leases with uncertain terms, structured financial instruments or customer contracts with multiple deliverables. The positions adopted are then challenged by auditors for lack of sufficient documentation.

Three days to work through these topics one by one using fully worked numerical cases. Each participant leaves with the corresponding consolidation adjustments and a template for documenting the judgements applied.

Learning objectives

  • Qualify a complex transaction under IFRS
  • Account for a business combination through to purchase price allocation
  • Adjust the group's leases and financial instruments
  • Determine and justify deferred tax arising on consolidation
  • Draft the disclosure notes expected on these topics

What makes this programme different

Cases are based on real transactions from listed and privately held groups
Every adjustment is captured in a consolidation workbook you can reuse afterwards
Time is set aside for the audit questions raised by participants

Programme

1Reporting framework and accounting judgement

Revisiting the foundations before tackling complex cases

  • Position the hierarchy of standards and the interpretation process
  • Identify the structural differences with other reporting frameworks applied locally
  • Document method choices and the judgements applied
  • Organise technical watch and updates to the group accounting manual

2Business combinations and scope of consolidation

Accounting for acquisitions without leaving grey areas

  • Assess control and determine the acquisition date
  • Measure identifiable assets and liabilities at fair value
  • Account for goodwill and non-controlling interests
  • Handle contingent consideration and subsequent adjustments

3Leases, financial instruments and revenue

The three areas where most adjustments arise

  • Identify a lease and measure the corresponding liability
  • Classify and measure the financial instruments held by the group
  • Break a customer contract down into performance obligations
  • Recognise revenue in line with the transfer of control

4Deferred tax and translation of foreign subsidiaries

Securing the items most exposed to error

  • Identify the temporary differences arising from consolidation adjustments
  • Assess the recoverability of deferred tax assets
  • Select translation rates and account for translation differences
  • Build the group's tax proof

5Financial statements and disclosure notes

Producing information that is clear and defensible

  • Structure the primary statements and segment information
  • Select the information to be disclosed in the notes
  • Prepare responses to auditors' questions
  • Organise the closing process and the analytical review of the consolidation
