Description

Artificial Intelligence Projects: Framing, Decision-Making and Deployment

Taking an artificial intelligence project through to genuine operational use rather than stopping at a demonstration

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Many artificial intelligence projects never move beyond the demonstration stage: the model performs well on a carefully selected dataset, but no one has defined who will use it, on which production data, or how the benefit will be measured. Business teams wait for results, management questions the budget already committed, and the initiative stalls.

These two days approach artificial intelligence from a project delivery perspective: use-case selection, data qualification, the choice between a market solution and bespoke development, model evaluation, deployment and the applicable governance framework. Each participant leaves with a completed framing sheet for their own use case.

Learning objectives

  • Identify an artificial intelligence use case with measurable value
  • Qualify the availability and quality of the data required
  • Decide between a market solution and bespoke development
  • Build the project plan and team through to deployment
  • Define result evaluation criteria together with end users
  • Embed compliance and risk management requirements into the project

What makes this programme different

Each participant works through their own use case and tests it against a feasibility grid
An investment committee is simulated so participants can defend the move into production
The classic reasons projects remain stuck at demonstration stage are addressed through real cases

Programme

1Framing the use case

Starting from the business problem, not the technology

  • Identifying tasks where machine learning delivers a measurable gain
  • Framing the problem in terms of prediction, classification or generation
  • Estimating expected value and the conditions required to achieve it
  • Reviewing alternatives that require no algorithm
  • Drafting the framing sheet

2Data and feasibility

Checking the raw material before committing

  • Inventory of data sources and their accessibility
  • Depth of history and representativeness of observations
  • Data quality, labelling and potential bias
  • Confidentiality constraints and handling of personal data
  • True cost of data preparation

3Running the project

Organising the work between business and technical teams

  • Choosing between a market solution, integration or bespoke development
  • Team composition and expected roles
  • Phasing from proof of value through to industrialisation
  • Budget, schedule and decision gates
  • Working with vendors and reversibility clauses

4Evaluation, deployment and compliance

Sustaining the solution over time

  • Defining evaluation criteria with end users
  • Test protocol and comparison with current practice
  • Integration into processes and support for users
  • Performance monitoring and observed drift over time
  • Transparency, documentation and risk management requirements

Who is it for

Project managers, information systems managers, business owners sponsoring a use case and managers involved in digital transformation.

Prerequisites

Prior experience of project delivery is desirable. No programming skills are required.
