Description

Business Data Pipelines: Framing Sources, Building the Flow and Securing Reliable Delivery

Build a data pipeline that holds up in production and genuinely supports a business decision

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Many data initiatives stop at the demonstration dashboard. The flow breaks as soon as a source changes format, nobody can confirm whether today's figures are complete, and the business quietly returns to its spreadsheets. The root cause is rarely the tool: it is the absence of a clear data contract and of proper monitoring of the flow.

This short virtual programme follows a pipeline end to end: framing the target decision, inventorying and contracting the sources, ingestion and transformation, quality testing, then publication and monitoring. Each stage is examined from the angle of what breaks in production and what must be put in place to detect it early.

Learning objectives

  • Articulate the business decision the pipeline is meant to support
  • Establish an interface contract with source owners
  • Design ingestion and transformation stages and their scheduling
  • Implement quality tests and rejection rules
  • Equip the flow with monitoring and incident handling

What makes this programme different

A single case study followed from source through to the delivered dashboard
A template interface contract ready to negotiate with a source owner
A set of quality tests written live on the case study data

Programme

1Framing the Need and the Sources

Start from the decision, not from the data

  • Formulate the business question and the expected level of analytical granularity
  • Inventory the sources and identify their owners
  • Agree format, frequency and availability commitments in a contract
  • Assess data sensitivity and access rights

2Building the Flow

Ingestion, transformation and scheduling

  • Choose between full load and incremental load
  • Structure the transformation layers
  • Handle reruns and the idempotence of processing steps
  • Schedule tasks and manage dependencies

3Making It Reliable and Operating It

What keeps a pipeline running in production

  • Write freshness, completeness and consistency tests
  • Define rejection and quarantine rules
  • Document indicators and how they are calculated
  • Monitor the flow and raise alerts at the right level
  • Organise recovery after an incident
