Description

Carbon Footprint: Measuring Emissions, Prioritising Levers and Tracking Results

Moving from an emissions inventory left in a drawer to a reduction plan that teams actually apply

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Many organisations already have an emissions inventory but struggle to turn it into decisions. The heaviest categories often sit within procurement or travel, and therefore with people who took no part in the calculation. The action plan is then reduced to a few internal gestures with no measurable effect on the overall result.

These two days are designed for those who have to act: understanding the structure of emissions, assessing the reduction potential of each lever, quantifying costs and gains, then bringing the relevant functions on board. Each participant builds a reduction roadmap suited to the scope under their responsibility.

Learning objectives

  • Interpret the structure of an emissions inventory and identify the decisive categories
  • Assess the reduction potential of each lever within your scope
  • Compare actions according to their effect their cost and their implementation time
  • Build a reduction trajectory and a dated action plan
  • Involve the procurement logistics and technical functions in implementation
  • Organise emissions monitoring and the updating of the inventory

What makes this programme different

Levers are ranked using an effect-cost-time matrix built during the session
Upstream categories linked to procurement and travel are worked on with the functions concerned
Each participant leaves with the reduction roadmap for their own scope

Programme

1Reading the emissions inventory

Knowing where the impact truly sits

  • Accounting boundaries and the meaning of the different categories
  • Sources of activity data and quality of the factors applied
  • Identifying dominant categories and calculation uncertainties
  • Comparing emissions intensity and emissions volume

2Internal reduction levers

Acting on what the organisation directly controls

  • Building energy consumption and operation of installations
  • Technical choices on equipment and utilities
  • Employee mobility and organisation of business travel
  • Management of waste streams and consumables
  • Effects of user behaviour and the role of site focal points

3Procurement transport and the value chain

Addressing emissions you do not generate yourself

  • Analysis of emissions linked to purchased goods and services
  • Dialogue with suppliers and criteria embedded in tender documents
  • Choice of transport modes and optimisation of logistics flows
  • Eco-design of products and services
  • Limits of offsetting approaches

4Trajectory action plan and monitoring

Sustaining reduction over time

  • Building a trajectory with intermediate milestones
  • Arbitrating between quick wins and structural investments
  • Allocation of responsibilities and integration into departmental objectives
  • Monitoring indicators and frequency of inventory updates
  • Communicating results internally and externally

Who is it for

CSR and sustainability managers, energy focal points, procurement and logistics managers, technical managers and transition project leaders involved in emissions reduction.

Prerequisites

Have an emissions inventory or activity data covering your scope.
